Frequently Asked Questions
About Our Practice
What ages do you see?
We welcome patients from birth through college (ages 0–21). We love growing alongside your family.
Are you part of a hospital or corporate medical group?
No. We are an independent, private pediatric practice. That means we make decisions based solely on what’s best for your child, guided by science, compassion, and connection, not corporate policies or insurance requirements.
Will I always see the same doctor?
Whenever possible, yes. We value continuity and relationships, so we work hard to keep you with the same provider for well and sick visits.
Do you have frequent changes in physicians?
Not at all. One of our physicians has been with Coastal Pediatrics for over 10 years, another for over 20, another for over 30 years!
Do you offer same-day sick visits?
Always. Please call us as soon as you know your child needs to be seen. Every day we leave spaces in our schedule for children who are sick or have urgent needs. This allows our patients to be seen in their medical home rather than an urgent care or ER.
Will you see my newborn in the hospital?
Yes. We are the only private pediatric practice in the area that still visits newborns every day they are in the hospital.
Appointments & Visits
How do I schedule an appointment?
Call our office during business hours or use our online appointment request form. Same-day sick visits are available most days.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes. We provide virtual visits for certain concerns, including some mental health consults.
What should I bring to my child’s first visit?
Bring your child’s insurance card, any prior medical records, immunization history, and a list of current medications.
What if I’m running late?
Please call us. We’ll do our best to accommodate, but we may need to reschedule if you arrive more than 15 minutes late.
Well-Child Care
How often should my child have a checkup?
We follow the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) schedule for well-child visits, frequent checkups in the first years, then yearly through age 21.
What’s included in a well-child exam?
We assess growth, development, nutrition, mental health, safety, and give recommended immunizations. It’s also a time for you to ask questions about anything from sleep to school readiness.
Vaccines & Prevention
Do you recommend vaccines?
Absolutely. Vaccines are one of the most effective ways to protect children from serious illness. We follow the CDC/AAP schedule and are happy to explain why timing matters.
Can we space out vaccines?
We do not recommend delaying or breaking up the schedule, as it leaves your child unnecessarily vulnerable. However, we will make exceptions for certain medical needs (e.g., prematurity, cochlear implants).

Sick Visits
What conditions can you treat in the office?
We can handle most common illnesses and minor injuries, including asthma flares, ear infections, rashes, fevers, and stitches for small cuts.
Should I call or come in if my child has a fever?
Call first. We’ll help you decide whether to monitor at home or come in. Infants under 2 months with any fever should be seen immediately.
Will you call me back after hours?
Yes. Our own physicians provide 24/7 on-call coverage, not an answering service.
Procedures & Special Services
Do you perform circumcisions?
Yes. We provide information during prenatal visits or early newborn visits so you can make an informed choice.
Do you offer mental health consultations?
We will help treat depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other mental health issues in many cases. Telehealth is also available for some patients.
Referrals & Specialists
Do I need a referral to see a specialist?
That depends on your insurance and where you are going to be seen. Even if you have a PPO, please make an appointment to discuss referrals so our physicians can best guide you. Our referral team can guide you through the process and recommend trusted specialists.
How long does it take to get a referral?
We submit referrals as soon as possible. If you have not heard back within 7–10 business days, please call our office.
Forms & Records
How do I request my child’s medical records?
Submit a signed records request form in person or via our forms page.
Do you complete school/camp forms?
Yes. Forms can be dropped off or uploaded via our portal. Please allow up to 5 business days.
Billing & Insurance
What insurance plans do you accept?
We accept most major insurance plans. Please call to confirm coverage before your visit.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. Our billing team can work with you to arrange payment schedules when needed.
